Man burned by lit firework thrown during match at Westpac Stadium

News from NZ Police
A 23 year old Blenheim man has been charged with wounding with reckless disregard for the safety of others. The charge relates to injuries sustained by a 40 year old man attending the All Whites vs Mexico soccer match on 20 November at Westpac Stadium.

It is alleged that a lit firework was thrown by the 23 year old from the back row of the stand, setting fire to the victim and causing serious burns which required hospital treatment. Police inquiries began after the extent of those injuries was brought to the attention of Police.

Inspector John Spence, Operation Commander for the event, says “Throwing a lit firework into a crowded stand is just plain stupid.”

“We have made contact with the victim who is still receiving treatment for his injuries. He was relieved to know someone was being held accountable for such reckless behaviour.”

The man will appear in Blenhiem District Court on Monday.
