State Highway One on the edge of Lake Taupo was closed for several hours this morning after a two-vehicle crash.
News from NZ Police at 8.30am
A two car crash on SH1 at Motutere, Taupo, has blocked the highway.
Early information is that two people were trapped but have been extracted with all emergency services in attendance, as is the police serious crash unit.
Two rescue helicopters have been called to the scene to transport the injured to hospital.
At this time, diversions are not in place and the public are asked to avoid the area.
UPDATE at 10am
Both injured people (status 1) are being transported to hospital via helicopter. One lane is now open utilising stop-go operator. The road will remain like this for some time as the cars are removed and debris removed. Traffic diversions cannot be implemented.

The road has been re-opened. The injured people are status 2.
