$1m damage after Fletcher fire in Tawa – police investigating arson

News from NZ Police
Police are investigating arson after a fire in the Fletcher Construction Yard in Tapaku Road, Tawa which began about 11.00pm on Thursday night.

The Wellington District Crime Squad has completed a scene examination and carrying out further enquiries in an attempt to identify the person responsible.

The cost of the damaged caused by the file is expected to be in excess of $1 million.

At about 5.00am yesterday morning a 54 year old Lower Hutt man was arrested for an arson related offence in central Wellington at about 10.00pm the previous night.

Given that both offences happened within an hour, Police are investigating any possible link.

Police are interested in anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the Takapu Road area on Thursday night between 10.00pm and midnight.

We are also interested in anyone who was working in a Service Station or shop between 10.00 and 11.00pm on Thursday and recalls selling any solvent or petrol in a can.
