Ray Wallace leading secret meeting of mayors opposed to amalgamation

Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace has been named today as organiser of a secret meeting of mayors who are opposed to super city plans.

He is named in the NZ Herald, which reports he has organised the meeting because of concerns that the Local Government Commission has made its mind up in areas being considered for amalgamation – including Wellington and Hawkes Bay.

“It has been like-minded mayors who have made it known they have concerns about the process,” Mr Wallace told the Herald, which says that 12 mayors are believed to be attending the meeting, to be held on Monday at the Wairakei Golf Course.

Mr Wallace is quoted as saying he believes the commission will recommend a Super City for Wellington – a solution he believes the public would not accept.

“Why would we want to go through all that heartache if there is a better way?”

Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett said the meeting smacked of exclusivity. “It’s very odd the vice-president of Local Government NZ would be leading a secret squirrel meeting of mayors trying to circumvent a judicial process.”
