A 27-year-old male pedestrian was struck and killed by a truck and trailer unit on State Highway 3 at Turakina in the Rangitïkei last night. He was Anthony Shramka, aged 27, of Whanganui.
The crash happened just after 10pm near the Whanganui Road intersection in the Turakina township. The truck driver and other witnesses gave first aid to the man but he died a short time later at the scene.
The driver of the truck was uninjured. Officers are formally speaking to him as well as the other witnesses.
Early indications suggest the man was attempting to hitchhike to Whanganui and stepped out into the path of the oncoming truck.
The Serious Crash Unit and the Whanganui Police are continuing their investigation.
Anyone who saw or heard the crash is asked to contact the Whanganui Police.

Whanganui Police have now spoken to the truck driver but are still in the process of speaking to other witnesses. The Serious Crash Unit and the Whanganui Police are continuing their investigation.
Police want to speak to anyone who saw a man hitchhiking between 9:30pm and 10:10pm near the Whanganui Road intersection in the Turakina Township last night. Police also still want to speak to anyone who saw or heard the crash.
