Car crosses median strip – 4 injured in head-on crash on SH2 at Upper Hutt

Just before 6:30am this morning, a car travelling north on State Highway 2 crossed the raised median strip and collided with a southbound vehicle between Gibbons Street and Totara Park Road in Upper Hutt.

There was one occupant in the northbound vehicle and three occupants in the southbound vehicle. The occupant in the rear of the southbound vehicle is in a serious condition and has been flown to Wellington Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The remaining occupants have been transported by ambulance with moderate injuries to Hutt Hospital.

After the crash, the road was closed in both directions, as the Police Serious Crash unit investigated the cause. Northbound traffic was diverted at Whakatiki Street till the main road reopened about 8am after the crash scene had been measured.

The southbound lanes remained closed until about 8:30am while that side of the highway was measured and photographed. Southbound traffic was diverted off SH 2 at Totara Park Road while the road was closed.
