Homicide investigation starts after death of injured woman in hospital

A homicide investigation has begun after the death of a 49-year-old Feilding woman who has been in Palmerston North Hospital with critical injuries since Thursday evening.

She was 49 year old Karen Makoare. She died yesterday morning in hospital with her family alongside her.

A post mortem examination was completed in Palmerston North today.

“Police have spoken to a number of Karen’s associates, including those who interacted with her in the days leading up to her being admitted to Palmerston North Hospital,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan.

“The investigation is ongoing and we have further inquiries to make, including seeking expert medical advice about a head injury which Karen had sustained.”

Considerable investigation work has been completed since Thursday and police have a clear understanding of the woman’s movements in the days leading up to this incident.

Nine detectives are involved with the investigation. The scene examination has been completed.
