Water main bursts in Tawa, supplies cut and road damaged

Press Release – Wellington City Council
Water was off in parts of Tawa this morning following the burst of a major water pipe under the south end of Main Road.

The 300 mm main burst near the intersection of Main Road and Oxford Street. Traffic was diverted through nearby streets.

The flow of water damaged a large section of tarmac on Main Road so motorists will have to expect disruptions today while the pipe and the road are repaired.

UPDATE from WCC at 4pm
Motorists are urged to avoid the southern end of Main Road in Tawa this evening where delays are likely following today’s water main burst.

A section of the roadway near the Oxford Street intersection was badly damaged and while both lanes are open the speed limit has been reduced to 30kmh while workers repair both the broken pipe and the roadway.

Northbound motorists should consider taking the motorway to Porirua and then ‘doubling back’ to Tawa.

Water supplies are gradually being restored to the immediate area but some properties may be without water until at least 5.30pm.
