Press Release – Wellington Kindergartens
More tests are being made of the soil around Pukerua Bay Kindergarten after small pieces of asbestos were found in the grounds last week. The area was immediately cordoned off and the asbestos was removed last Thursday by an experienced asbestos removal company.
“We have had good advice that the kindergarten grounds are safe” says Amanda Coulston, general manager of Wellington Kindergartens. “Further testing is being undertaken to reassure families – this is another step that can be taken.”
The top layer of the soil and the subsoil will be tested and results will be available within 36 hours.
“We take safety of children very seriously. Every morning before children arrive for the day, teachers undertake hazard inspections at each of our 63 kindergartens to ensure the environment is safe.“
An email was sent to all parents at Pukerua Bay Kindergarten last week about the situation, and a further email is being sent today. The Pukerua Bay Kindergarten facebook page and Wellington Kindergartens’ facebook page and website also contain information.
The Ministry of Education has been informed and is satisfied with the Kindergarten’s actions to date. The Ministry supports further testing to reassure families.
Regional Public Health has also been informed and is providing advice.
