A power cut lasted between 15 and 20 minutes in Wellington this morning.

Electricity was cut to Parliament and to buildings at the Parliament end of The Terrace. A power cut was also reported in Karori, Khandallah, Crofton Downs and Ngaio.

MetLink reported at 10.20 that there would be delays to Go Wellington buses.

A Victoria University student reported that lecture theatres had been blacked out at the Pipitea campus, but at least one lecturer had continued talking, in the dark.

In Featherston Street, Rydgees Hotel said it was without power.

Wellington Electricity was investigating the fault which it believed was a TransPower problem.

By 10.40, TransPower said that electricity supplies had been restored. It said there had been a fault at its Wilton substation, which it was investigating.

TransPower was yesterday afternoon dealing with a power cut to 80,000 Hawkes Bay homes and businesses. It had restored power by early evening.

It said the cause of the outage was simultaneous lightning strikes on two of the major transmission circuits running into the Hawkes Bay area.

Parliament without power? The seat of government? Maybe time to buy back the local electric company to make sure the New Zealand government keeps on running.
