“Laugh-out-loud hilarious” – Mark Bell – FILM THREAT
Kiwi fans will get the first look at the brand new film from local comedy heavyweights Taikia Waititi and Jemaine Clement with today’s release of the official trailer of ‘What We Do In The Shadows’
The soon-to-be cult classic follows a Mockumentry crew as they go inside the lives of four vampires living in a flat in Wellington. The film is loosely based on a short film the pair created eight years ago. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and has since shown to critical acclaim at the Berlin, SXSW and recently the Stany (Kubrick) festival where it picked up the audience award.
“We’ve been working on this film a long time and are excited to finally bring it to New Zealand audiences,” says Waititi. “We made this film for fans of Boy and Flight of the Conchords – we think Kiwis appreciate our style of comedy more than anyone and it’s our job to please them. Not physically, that’s too hard with our busy schedules and could cause problems in our personal lives. We aim to please them… entertainmentingly. If that’s a word. It is now.”
‘What We Do In the Shadows’ is set for a nationwide cinema release from mid June.
ABOUT THE FILM:
Flatmates Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonny Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) are three vampires who are just trying to get by in modern society; from paying rent and sticking to the housework roster to trying to get invited in to nightclubs, they’re just like anyone else – except they’re immortal and must feast on human blood. They have one more flatmate, 8000 year-old Petyr(Ben Fransham) who epitomizes the film’s title, he sleeps in the basement, literally in The Shadows.
When Petyr, turns 20-something human hipster Nick (Cori Gonzalez Macuer), into a vampire, the guys must teach him the ropes and guide him through his newfound eternal life. And in return they are forced to learn a thing or two about modern society, fashions, technology, and the Internet. But it’s the introduction of Nick’s human friend, Stu (Stu Rutherford), that really changes the vampire’s lives and attitudes towards the ever-changing world around them.
When Stu’s life is threatened, the vamps show us that maybe humans are worth fighting for, and that even though your heart may be cold and dead, it doesn’t mean you can’t feel anything.
