Press Release – Wellington City Council
The Wellington City Council Community, Sport and Recreation Committee has granted $846,000 to support social, recreation and pool projects in Wellington through the Social and Recreation Fund and the School Pools Partnerships Fund.
24 projects were funded totalling $346,000 through the Social and Recreation Fund. Projects ranged from the support for the First Tee programme which uses golf to engage with young people to the work of the Wellington Women’s Health Collective, Pablos and the Sexual Abuse Network.
Ongoing support was approved for 8 local organisations for 6 youth programmes including those run by Zeal and the Wellington Boys’ and Girls’ Institute as well as for the Wellington Timebank and Enviroschools.
2 schools were funded totalling $500,000 through the School Pools Partnership Fund. Kahurangi School in Strathmore plan to upgrade and enclose their existing school pool to create an accessible community facility and Makara Model School for improvements to their pool that serves the wider rural Makara community.
Councillor Paul Eagle says, It’s always challenging to allocate a limited pool of money.
“We receive applications from so many worthy projects making it difficult when allocating limited funds to all those deserving of support.”
The Social and Recreation Fund aims to support projects that contribute to Wellington’s strategic direction and build strong, sustainable, well connected communities.
Applications are open for the next funding round of the Social and Recreation Fund, with a closing date of 20 August 2014 for projects starting from 18 September.
The School Pools Partnership Fund, established in 2010/11 aimed to improve access to and uptake of learn to swim, aquatic education, sport and enjoyment by increasing the total available pool capacity and aquatic programme opportunities throughout Wellington by supporting capital programmes in schools. 2013/14 was the fourth and final year of this fund.
