Two Wellington psychiatrists to be spokespeople for alcohol law reform

Press Release – Alcohol Action NZ
Alcohol Action NZ announces today the establishment of two new medical spokespeople for the organisation: Wellington-based psychiatrists Dr Jeremy McMinn and Dr Sam McBride.

Dr McMinn and Dr McBride are both psychiatrists and addiction medicine specialists.

Dr McMinn holds the position of NZ Chair of the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine, Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

Dr McBride is the NZ Representative of the Section on Addiction Psychiatry, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

It is clear the current government is reluctant to institute any substantial alcohol law reform, while at the same time enormous harm from alcohol continues to affect many New Zealanders. Alcohol Action NZ is stepping up its operation in preparation for the next Parliamentary cycle.

“We are very pleased that two psychiatrists of the calibre of Drs McMinn and McBride have accepted our invitation to be new medical spokespeople for Alcohol Action” said Prof Jennie Connor.

“It is exciting to find energetic younger medical colleagues who have the same commitment to evidence-based alcohol law reform and who are prepared to step across the line from treating patients to advocating for environmental changes” added Dr Geoff Robinson.
