Police blame alcohol and speed for fatal road crash in Eketahuna

A man was killed when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a power pole at the corner of Herbert Street and Alfredton Road in Eketahuna last night.

He was Adrian James Ihaka, aged 36, of Eketahuna.

Officer are continuing to speak to witnesses to piece together the events leading up to the crash.

Members of the public witnessed the crash and called emergency services.

The man had been at a social gathering and was involved in an argument prior to the crash. He had left the gathering and driven approximately 600 metres down the road when the crash happened.

“Initial indications suggest that alcohol and speed are two factors that have caused this tragic and totally preventable crash. First aid was administered to the man who was the only occupant in the vehicle, however he was pronounced dead at the scene,” says Senior Sergeant Kris Burbery, Acting Central District Road Policing Manager.

The Serious Crash Unit has launched an investigation into the crash and have conducted a scene examination.

The crash investigation is ongoing and the death has been referred to the Coroner.
