Members of the public rescued a 12-year-old girl who was being swept down the flooded Taylor River in Blenheim today.
At 8.45am it was reported that the girl, who was walking to school, had been swept away in the river near High Street.
Two men, one aged 17, chased the girl along the river bank and eventually recovered her from the water near Beaver Road.
The 12 year old was taken to hospital in a serious condition. The 17-year-old was also been taken to hospital suffering mild hypothermia, but the other rescuer did not require medical attention.
Senior Sergeant Dan Mattison said the quick actions of the teenage boy and the other man involved in the rescue had saved the girl’s life.
