Man crushed to death while pruning tree

A man in his 60s was killed in an accident while pruning a tree in Feilding yesterday morning.

At around 11.45am he was pruning a tree ahead of trying to fell it, at a friend’s address in Seddon Street, Feilding. Early indications are that as he cut a limb off the tree, the safety equipment holding him was caught and pulled him into the trunk of the tree, fatally crushing him.

An investigation has been launched and Police will be working to clarify the events that led to the death.

Sergeant Kaine Austin says “We are in the early stages of this investigation and we will be speaking to witnesses to determine exactly what has occurred. Worksafe New Zealand has been notified and will be assisting Police with our inquiries.”

A family member was in the area when the incident occurred. Police will be working to notify his family ahead of releasing his name. The matter has been referred to the coroner.
