Woman dies in crash near Kaitoke; Rimutaka Hill road closed for four hours

Wellington.Scoop
A woman was killed this morning in a two-vehicle crash that blocked the Rimutaka Hill Road near Kaitoke for more than four hours.

The Transport Agency advised at 7.55am that the road was expected to be closed “for a while.” Later reports said the road was closed between Featherston and Kaitoke. It was reopened at 11am.

The DomPost reported that traffic was backed up to the bottom of the Rimutaka Hill Road and many drivers were turning around and heading back to the Wairarapa.

News from NZ Police
At around 7.15am this morning two vehicles crashed on State Highway 2 near Kaitoke. Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed this crash to contact the Wellington District Strategic Traffic Unit.

Sergeant Dave Townsend says “We are particularly interested in anyone who witnessed the actual collision rather than those arriving shortly afterwards.”

“It is far too early to speculate on the cause of the crash and a Serious Crash Unit investigation is continuing. Investigators completed their examination of the crash scene this morning at around 11.00am and thank the public for the patience while this was completed.”

Police are advising the family members of the woman driver who died at the scene and will not be releasing her name until this process is completed. The driver of the other vehicle was being treated in hospital today.
