Masked man with machete tries to steal cigarettes and cash from Porirua dairy

News from NZ Police
Porirua Police are searching for a man who tried to steal cigarettes and cash from a dairy on Spinnaker Drive in Porirua last night.

At about 7:22pm, the owner walked from the rear of the store to discover a man with a bandana covering his face using a machete in an attempt to force open the cigarette cabinet. When he was unable to open this he attempted to open the till. When confronted by the owner the man ran from the store empty handed, smashing a glass counter.

“It is very disappointing that these hard working people have been the victim of this crime. The incident could have easily escalated. We are lucky someone was not injured. Shop owners who find themselves in these situations need to be careful they don’t expose themselves to harm and are encourage to immediately phone Police,” says Detective Sergeant Mike Sears of the Wellington District Crime Squad.

“We want to assure the community that we will do everything we can to identify this offender. We do not believe that this incident is related to other incidents in the area”.

Police urge anyone with any information to contact them as soon as possible at the Porirua Police on (04) 237 2114 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
