Swiss woman, 32, hit by car and killed on pedestrian crossing

A woman was killed and her partner injured after they were hit by a vehicle on a pedestrian crossing on Ferguson Street in Palmerston North yesterday evening.

The 32-year-old woman and her partner were walking across the pedestrian crossing at approximately 6:20pm when eha vehicle hit them.

The woman died at the scene. Her partner received minor injuries and was treated by ambulance staff.

The woman who was killed was Stefanie Von Bueren, aged 32, from Switzerland. She was studying at a local tertiary institution.

Officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Nigel Affleck says: “We are supporting Stefanie’s partner and are continuing to speak to witnesses and the driver of the vehicle to determine what factors have led to the crash.

“The driver was not injured, but was very shaken by the incident. Weather conditions at the time of the crash were fine and traffic was moderate.

“Charges against the driver of the vehicle are under consideration.”

The death has now been referred to the Coroner.
