Press Release – Darren Watson
New Zealand’s favourite rhythm and blues-man, Darren Watson, can’t wait to return to Paekakariki with his solo show “Darren Watson – One Voice, One Guitar, The Blues” on Saturday 27 September.
Darren has been a hot topic in the national news recently with his politically charged single ‘Planet Key’, which reached number 5 on the Top 20 NZ Singles Chart before the Electoral Commission advised that they believed it was an ‘election programme’ and even an ‘election advertisement’ and the song was effectively removed from all airplay and sales online and on TV and radio.
It is hoped a decision in the High Court on 11 September will allow Darren to sell his work again and have it broadcast.
But of course Darren is about more than politics and he is promising an intimate experience with classic blues from the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and 50s, along with a bunch of his award-winning original tunes.
“For my hard core regular fans there’ll be a different mix of songs alongside their usual favourites. And, if the majority of audience votes for it, I may even give them a solo version of Planet Key.”
Support for the evening will be Matt Hay & Clint Meech playing Matt’s fine original Americana based material.
If the show doesn’t sell out with the advance price of $20 at eventfinder.co.nz there will be limited tickets on the door at $25.
Darren Watson has spent almost three decades ‘paying his blues dues’ touring New Zealand and beyond with successful bands like Chicago Smoke Shop, and working alongside American and Kiwi blues legends like Billy Boy Arnold and Midge Marsden.
