Man with pistol arrested after stealing cigarettes from dairy

Police have arrested a 24-year-old man following a robbery this morning at a dairy on Rhodes Drive in Kelvin Grove, Palmerston North.

The man entered the store and pointed a pistol at a staff member, before leaving with tobacco products.

The offender was found shortly after the robbery as a result of Police enquiries and patrols. Two members of the public provided information to the Police after seeing the man and his vehicle fleeing from the scene.

The pistol and stolen tobacco products were recovered by the Police. The man is being charged with aggravated robbery and will appear in Palmerston North District Court tomorrow.

Also in Palmerston North, a 35-year-old man has been arrested following the serious assault on a woman at a property on Keith Street yesterday morning.

The 26-year-old woman arrived home around 10:40am to find her house being burgled. She was then assaulted and suffered facial and skull fractures.

The man has been charged with burglary, aggravated assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He will appear in Palmerston North District Court tomorrow.
