Petone printer wins eight awards

Press Release – Gravure Packaging
Petone-based printer Gravure Packaging Ltd (GPL) has achieved its best-ever return of medals at this year’s prestigious Pride In Print Awards.

In addition to claiming the Process Award for Gravure Print, GPL was bestowed with five Gold Medals and two Highly Commendeds — surpassing its previous-best result of five Gold Medals in 2007, says GPL commercial manager Andrew Young.

“We only made nine entries, so to have eight successes is a great strike rate,” says Mr Young.

“Before we put entries into Pride In Print we go through a rigorous screening process internally, where our pre-press, sales and technical people carefully review the work before we decide which jobs will be submitted.”

Describing Musashi Shred & Burn 60g as a “very challenging job”, Mr Young says it is extremely rewarding to see this work recognised as Process Award-winning standard.

“The job is laminated in-line as it is being printed. This adds a level of complication not normally seen in similar jobs where lamination is often done after printing or ‘offline’.

“The print in this job was in perfect registration — the high-definition print cylinders used created a fantastic print result, resulting in photo-realistic images and eye-catching colour.”

Vitaco Health’s senior procurement specialist Pippa Burge said her team was “absolutely delighted” when informed of the Awards Night success by GPL’s newly appointed business development manager Michele Agar.

Says Ms Agar: “Pippa was very much excited to learn that one of Vitaco’s designs had won the Gravure Process Award.”

To help produce work of the quality necessary to compete for Pride In Print Awards, the Petone factory’s large gravure presses were recently updated to handle GPL’s proprietary high-definition image reproduction technology.

“With gravure printing being an analogue process, the mechanical ink transfer is pretty consistent, however, the new high-definition cylinder technology introduced by GPL last year was instrumental in this winning work.”

Mr Young says such advancements were also at the fore of this year’s “extremely attractive” Gold Medal-winning Almo — Almond Milk label, which was created by Ms Agar.

“In addition to the clever, clean and simplistic design, the cylinder technology we use was further enhanced, leading to the Gold Medal in the Industry Development Category.

“The straight edges in the black line work — something not usually found with the gravure process — were a feature, along with the unique engraving for the very high-lustre gold ink laydown — which, even after shrinking, retained its very high lustre. The third leg of the trifecta was the white ink — our super white provides the highest level of opacity and is enhanced with a registered matt varnish.

“The ink and cylinder developments used for Almo are nice extensions to the work previously produced by GPL in developing light-blocking technology for light-sensitive products such as milk and juice products.”

In regards to other forward-looking developments at GPL, Mr Young says the firm’s trans-Tasman strategy with Sydney-based Australian Packaging (AP) is “continuing to strengthen”.

“GPL recently commenced work with an Australian client in the medical sector. AP introduced this customer to GPL and we are now providing them with a laminated product using the same press as the Musashi job. This is an exciting entry into the medical sector for GPL and AP.”

Furthermore, Mr Young is advising the marketplace to “watch this space”.

“We are excited about a top-secret project we are working on this year and if it goes commercial, it will be a fantastic story to tell for next year’s Awards. We reckon it will be a strong contender for the Supreme Award.”

GPL’s full list of honours from this year’s Awards Night, which was held at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand at Wigram (Christchurch) on May 12, entailed:
