Making change: candidate’s vision for Wellington

by Laurie Foon
Imagine Wellington as the smartest, coolest, most sustainable little capital in the world. This is my vision. It’s not a vision anyone can achieve alone, but I want my kids to grow up believing we stand up if we want to make change.

I’m standing for council in the Southern Ward because I want to see change that will make my vision a reality for my children and generations to come. I want to make good things happen for our city. There are so many great people, organisations and business who are committed to making a positive change in Wellington. I have had the pleasure of working with these people through my role at the Wellington Sustainable Business Network, interviewing them for the radio podcast B-side stories and being part of Wellington’s fantastic creative community.

I have worked tirelessly for Wellington to shine a light on good ideas, to help get them off the ground and to make them sustainable. My new year’s resolution was to have an even more positive impact for our world. Earlier this year, my efforts were recognised with an Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian Award. It was a honour to receive this, so when the role of councillor came up, I seized the opportunity to step up even further and give back.

I am standing to be the Southern Ward councillor so I can hold the Wellington City Council to its low carbon plan and facilitate the work underway to improve transport options and become a more waste conscious community.

I want to improve how we engage our communities through better consultation and greater support for our community groups. I will support diversity in our community by backing council and business investment in social and affordable homes.

For 20 years I was a leader in the ethical and eco-fashion industry, developing and growing my business Starfish, creating hundreds of jobs locally. I am passionate about making Wellington a business-friendly city by strengthening support for local businesses and collaborating with our talented social innovators.

I have lived in Wellington all my life and called Berhampore home for for 17 years. I am proud to have raised my family in this diverse, strong community. So if you live in the Southern Ward please vote 1 for me, Laurie Foon. Together, let’s make good things happen.

Laurie Foon is one of eight candidates in the byelection for the Southern Ward of the Wellington City Council.
