Peak hour delays on SH1 – lane closed for repairs to broken wastewater main

News from NZ Transport Agency / Waka Kotahi
There were major delays for northbound traffic on State Highway 1 (SH1) north of Wellington this evening, due to emergency works by Wellington Water.

A wastewater main has burst for a second time on SH1 near Whitford Brown and crews are onsite carrying out emergency repairs.

This work requires one of the northbound lanes to be closed during peak traffic hours.

At 5.30, traffic was backed up into Porirua and back to the Mungavin interchange.

State Highway One northbound will be reduced to one lane over the weekend while the repair work continues.

Motorists are encouraged to delay their journey or take an alternative route, if possible.

What is the alternative route that the NZTA is suggesting but never specifying?
