Lambton Quay buildings evacuated – but it was a false alarm

Report from RNZ
Police shut down part of Lambton Quay in central Wellington early this afternoon and hundreds of people were evacuated from buildings on both sides of the road.

Police said the area was being evacuated because they were alerted to a suspicious bag near a bus stop on Lambton Quay.

But it turned out to be a false alarm.

Hundreds of people were lining the streets.

“Everyone leave,” one officer was repeating loudly as she directed people away.

Buildings in two blocks of the CBD including Whitcoulls were evacuated as a precaution and cordons were in place stopping foot traffic. Vehicle traffic was diverted.

Emergency services have since been stood down.
