There were delays for traffic in both directions on State Highway 1 this afternoon a bus broke down and blocked two lanes at Mackays Crossing near the intersection with Whareroa Rd.

The breakdown was reported by NZTA at 3.50.

It was cleared at 4.10pm but congestion continued.

At 4.30pm, northbound traffic was queued back to the Paekakariki Hill Road.

At 5pm, southbound queues were back to Raumati Road.

NZTA advised drivers to be patient till the congestion had cleared.

Southbound delays had cleared by 7.30pm, at which time NZTA was advising drivers to “have a nice evening and stay warm.”

The NZTA photo of the traffic jam co-incidentally happens to include a couple of buses. These are clearly not the buses that caused the jam, in case anyone was wondering.

Trains were being replaced by buses all day on Sunday… (there is re-sleepering occurring in Tunnel 1).
