Driver, 61, killed in two-car crash on SH1 at Te Horo

There was a fatal accident on State Highway One between Peka Peka and Te Horo last night.

NZTA reported that the crash was near the intersection with Te Hapua Road at 7.50pm.

The sole occupant of one car was killed in the crash. He was 61-year-old Francis Heard of Horowhenua.

The sole occupant of the second car was airlifted to Wellington Hospital with serious injuries.

The highway was closed between Waikanae and Te Horo till 3a.m., with no detour available.

Police are appealing for information from the public as they investigate the circumstances of the crash.

In particular, anyone who saw a black 1998 Nissan Terrano vehicle travelling northbound prior to the crash is asked to contact Police by calling 105 and quoting event number P048176036. Drivers of vehicles in the area with dashcams are also asked to check for any footage of this vehicle.

The DomPost reports that many cars tried to travel on Peka Peka Beach to avoid the closed road. And many had to be towed when they got stuck in the sand. On the road, a local resident said traffic was backed up “as far as you could see.”
