Our 50th film festival: now on eight cinema screens

film fest doors

Printed programmes for the annual Wellington Film Festival went into distribution today – somewhat later than intended because of printing delays.

The schedule has been online since last week, but many of us hold out for the printed version before making our choice.

The film festival’s 50th anniversary season starts next Thursday with the sold-out New Zealand premiere of Jane Campion’s new feature The Power of the Dog, which won her the best director award at Venice. The programme includes 170 films. The Wellington event is now named the New Zealand International Film Festival, and it also screens in a dozen other centres. (But Auckland had to be cancelled this year because of covid, and Christchurch has been postponed for the same reason.) Wellington was postponed this year from its usual mid-year slot, also because of covid.

Ticket sales this year are restricted because of spatial distancing required under Level 2. But for all film festival followers, the hope is that the annual event will be able to start on time next Thursday.
