Seven hours of congestion after SH1 closed by fatal crash between Tawa and Porirua

State Highway 1 was closed by a fatal crash between Tawa and Porirua early this morning. One southbound lane was reopened at 7am, but northbound lanes remained closed till mid-morning, with a detour through Tawa.

Police said the two-car crash was reported at 3.20am.

At 9am, northbound traffic was queued back to the Ngauranga Gorge. Due to the northbound delays, NZTA told drivers to use SH2 on to SH58 when travelling north.

At 9am, the second southbound lane reopened.

When both northbound lanes were reopened at 10am, traffic was still backed up to Johnsonville.

Traffic wasn’t flowing freely in both directions till 10.30, seven hours after the fatal crash.

The Police Serious Crash Unit began an investigation.

A second SH1 crash at 7.30am blocked a southbound lane on Aotea Quay ahead of the Terrace Tunnel and causing further delays. It was cleared after about an hour, but congestion was slow to disperse.

Motorists were given the usual advice: consider delaying the journey, please be patient and follow instructions from contractors and Police.
