Report from RNZ
A new Chinese ambassador arrived in Wellington yesterday.

Wang Xiaolong has been appointed as the 14th ambassador of China to New Zealand. The previous ambassador Wu Xi left late last year.

In a statement, Wang said he was pleased and honoured to take up the role as the two countries prepare to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic ties.

He said China attaches great importance to China-New Zealand relations and would like to promote the healthy and stable development of their strategic partnership.

Wang pledges to achieve the goal through enhancing communications and deepening practical cooperation.

Anna; do you know or have any knowledge of Wang Xiaolong? I was quite impressed with the previous ambassador and she took an active interest in local affairs. With China showing a lot of aggressive and bellicose behaviour in the South China Sea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang, I wonder how this new ambassador will handle these issues. I have a friend in Xinjiang but have lost contact with her so fear the worst.

Appointment possibly signals renewed belt and road focus. Embassy not saying whether he went via MIQ or used diplomatic immunity to avoid. [via twitter]
