Near-midnight earthquake felt throughout NZ

There was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake late last night. It was centred 25km east of Stratford.

The earthquake at 11.49pm was felt throughout New Zealand.

More than 35,000 people reported it on the GeoNet website.

GeoNet says the earthquake was at a depth of 187 kilometres.

Among the tweeted responses was this one this morning from the Wellington City Council:

Last night’s little shake was a good reminder to make sure we’re all prepared for big earthquakes!

And the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office had this to say:

Wee bit of a rattle there eh! A good reminder for getting yourself prepared.

And Kapiti Coast District councillor Gwynn Compton:

Oh come on I’d just gotten to sleep! Could hear it was going to get stronger from the rumble outside

The NZ Herald reports that some people felt the quake as a “long and powerful shake.”
