Man dies after being attacked in Boulcott Street; murder inquiry begins

Wellington Police investigating a serious assault in Boulcott Street early on Saturday morning have upgraded it to a homicide investigation. The 43 year old male victim died in Wellington Hospital.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Miller of the Wellington CIB says the victim suffered the fatal injuries between 5:30am and 6:15am as he walked home from work on The Terrace.

“As the victim got halfway down Boulcott Street outside the Baptist Church it appears an altercation has taken place and as a result the victim received fatal injuries.”

D/S/S Miller says Police have spent much of the day completing a scene examination and an area canvas.

“We have a number of enquiries which need to be carried out over the coming days to ascertain what has occurred and how this victim came to be fatally assaulted.”

“I urge anyone who was in the vicinity of Boulcott Street between 5:30am and 6:15am on Saturday morning who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to come forward as soon as possible and contact us on (04) 381 2000 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Wellington Police are investigating a serious assault which occurred between 5:30am and 6:15am in Boulcott Street this morning. Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Miller of the Wellington CIB says a man in his early 40s left work on The Terrace at 5:30am and walked through Gilmore Terrace to Boulcott Street.

“The victim got halfway down Boulcott Street outside the Baptist Church where there appears an altercation has taken place. As a result, the victim has received serious injuries.”

The man was taken to Wellington Hospital and has undergone surgery. He remains in a serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

“We would like to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the vicinity of Boulcott Street between 5:30am and 6:15am.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Miller says the victim was wearing a grey long sleeved striped shirt, faded blue jeans, a grey cotton jacket and a black adidas backpack.

“I urge anyone with any information on this incident to come forward and contact Police on (04) 381 2000 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
