Friday morning’s earthquake was followed by a gas fire at Victoria University.

Staff and students were evacuated from the library building and from the new Hub, and fire engines were called to Kelburn Parade (above) to put out the fire. No one was injured.

Geonet described the Friday earthquake as severe and said it measured 5.7 and was 30km east of Seddon at a depth of 8km.

The quake – at 9.07am – was felt throughout the Wellington CBD, including in the Scoop office where it was described as a “pretty decent shake.”

Geonet has since recorded seven more quakes in the same area east of Seddon. A quake at 3.21pm was categorised as “strong.” The others have been “light to moderate.”
