Readings carpark demolition not starting till January – will take three months

When our ten post-quake questions to the mayor were answered yesterday, we weren’t given any timeline for demolishing the unsafe Readings carpark. However less than 24 hours later a council staff person has given the details to the DomPost.

The DomPost quotes Phil Becker, of the Wellington City Council, as saying that demolition will begin on January 4, and will take three months.

“You have got to take hundreds and thousands of bits of concrete out without damaging anything else around it.”

The council spokesperson also provided startling news about the extent of the damage. He said that nine of the car park’s 11 support column structurally failed in the earthquake. “The building’s knackered.”
